How Can I Make Money as a Student in Nigeria?
You are a student in Nigeria, at a university or a polytechnic. You have a phone and a timetable, and you want to make money in the gaps it leaves.
After reading, you will know how to weigh a way of making money against what is particular to Nigeria. You will be able to recognise the scams the authorities warn about, and you will know what to tick before you answer an offer.
We do guided affiliation, and students in Nigeria can join it. Other ways of doing this exist, and they are not wrong for being different.
What is particular to studying in Nigeria
Nigeria's 1999 Constitution has the business of the National Assembly conducted in English, and in Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba when arrangements have been made for it.
The language an activity asks for is still something to check, one offer at a time.
DataReportal's Digital 2026 report for Nigeria, published in November 2025, counts 109 million internet users, 45.5 percent of the population. It counts 165 million mobile connections, equal to 69.2 percent of the population, and notes that many people use more than one.
Meta's advertising tools reach 38.0 million people on Facebook in Nigeria and 10.0 million on Instagram. On Ookla's data for August 2025, the median download speed is 44.96 Mbps on mobile networks and 28.90 Mbps on fixed connections.
These figures show fewer than half of the people online, Facebook well ahead of Instagram, and mobile networks faster than fixed connections.
Ways to make money that fit around classes in Nigeria
Each option is weighed on four things: the language, the people it reaches, the connection, and the moment in your week. None is ranked above another.
Tutoring
In which language: the one the person you help needs.
Where it reaches people: around where you live or study, including the many who are not online.
Which connection: in person, none at all.
When: set hours, usually evenings or weekends.
A small service sold online
In which language: translating into or out of English, or writing and layout in the language the client asks for.
Where it reaches people: where the buyers are, and Facebook reaches far more people in Nigeria than Instagram.
Which connection: it depends on the files. On the figures above, the mobile network is the faster of the two.
When: in blocks, to the client's deadlines.
Short videos for brands
In which language: that of the brand's audience.
Where it reaches people: the platform the brand picks.
Which connection: video means heavy files, and on the figures above mobile networks are faster than fixed ones.
When: a calm moment to film, rarely found between two courses.
Guided affiliation
In which language: basic English, enough to read a caption and reply to a message.
Where it reaches people: Instagram, the smaller of the two Meta platforms in Nigeria. You do not need followers of your own.
Which connection: the videos arrive edited and ready to post from your phone.
When: a few short moments a day, about 15 minutes altogether.
Side hustles ranked on five points for a student week are in side hustles for college students you can do from home.
A warning to keep in mind before you say yes to an offer
In July 2025, as Voice of Nigeria reported, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission warned about scams that promise returns hard to believe, set up fake trading platforms, and often vanish without a trace. Its advice: an offer that sounds too good to be true is probably a fraud.
The thing to watch for is a request to buy in or to deposit, at the start or later on.
So, a rule. If an offer asks you to buy anything or to deposit anything, at any point, say no. That goes for every offer, ours too.
The five questions in starting a side hustle with no experience help you look at any offer before you answer.
Guided affiliation, for students in Nigeria
Guided affiliation is open to students in Nigeria. For now, our affiliates post on Instagram, on an account we create with them and keep separate from their own.
We make the videos and write the captions. No followers of your own are needed. You post from your phone when it suits you, for around 15 minutes a day.
What we need from you is regular posting. It is a small extra beside your studies, not made to take over your days.
There is nothing to buy and nothing to deposit, at any point, which is the rule above applied to us.
Before you say yes: a checklist
- It fits around my courses.
- I have checked the connection it needs, and I have it.
- I have checked the language it asks.
- Nobody asks me to buy anything or to deposit anything, now or later.
